Info about the birding spots:
Starts in Mazatlan, Sinaloa:
Mazatlan and the Durango Hwy:
In Mazatlan area we start by visiting a couple estuaries situated only 15 minutes from the “Golden zone” (main touristic area). The habitat is between dry forest and mangroves, and this is a very soft birding since we walk along good condition trails. Target species are Purplish-backed Jay, Rufous-bellied Chachalaca, Gila and Golden-cheeked Woodpeckers, Scrub Euphonia, Orange-fronted Parakeet, Sinaloa Wren, and many aquatic species mainly in winter season. This kind of tour is special if you are having here a cruise stop, or having vacations with your family without can´t spend more than a morning for birding activities.
A very interesting and famous tour in Mexico is the Mazatlan-Durango Hwy, and if you are already here in Mazatlan you can’t lose the opportunity of this wonderful experience. We depart from Mazatlan, and live an incredible birding from sea level to 6000ft high. At the foothills the experience starts with the amazing Black-throated Magpie-Jay, Yellow-winged Caciques, and White-throated Thrushes, Military Macaw, etc; we can spend a night in a small town here if you decide to do more extensive birdwatching. Then, we keep driving up to get to the Tufted Jay Preserve (also known as Barranca Rancho Liebre), you will be able to see the amazing Tufted Jay, ‘til now the only place on earth to see it. Other targets are: Red Warbler, Golden-browed Warbler, White-stripped Woodcreeper, Mountain Trogon, Red-headed Tanager, Blue Mockingbird, and Green-stripe Brush-Finch. We also can spend the night in the preserve since there are beautiful cabins to stay. (drive takes 2.5hrs Mzt-TJP).
If you still have time and want to extend your trip in the area, we can go visit the named “Bobbie rocks”, which are small islands in front of Mazatlan where you can easily see the Blue-footed and Brown Boobies. Besides, you can have a wonderful experience here by looking sea lions resting in the rocks, dolphins at sides of the boat, and even better we will go further in the ocean looking for storm-petrels and also having a whale watching experience, humpbacks are the majority.
